The calculator uses a standard modular brick face size of 19 cm × 9 cm (0.19 m × 0.09 m) — the exposed face you see when looking at the finished wall — and adds a flat 5% wastage allowance for cracked or broken bricks. It then multiplies by the number of brick layers (wythes) implied by your wall thickness: a 9 cm (single-wythe) wall uses 1 layer, an 18–23 cm (double-wythe/9-inch) wall uses 2 layers, and so on. The number of bricks is always rounded up to the next whole brick.

Worked Example

For a compound wall 6 m long and 3 m high, built to a standard 9-inch (0.23 m) double-wythe thickness:

Wall Area = 6 × 3 = 18 m²
Brick Layers = ROUND [ 0.23 ÷ 0.09 ] = 2
Bricks (single layer) = ROUND UP [ 18 ÷ (0.19 × 0.09) × 1.05 ] = ROUND UP [ 1,052.6 × 1.05 ] = 1,106
Total Bricks = 1,106 × 2 = 2,212 bricks

So an 18 m² wall face built to double-wythe (9-inch) thickness needs roughly 2,212 standard modular bricks including the 5% breakage buffer. The same wall built as a single-wythe (4.5-inch / 0.09 m) partition would need only 1,106 bricks, since the calculator scales the brick count directly with the thickness you enter.
